It was morning, 1943 in the summertime
when they heard, the news he was coming home
after all these years in the war
he was a captain of the infantry
until the day when he saw too much.

Nothing works and nothing does the trick,
like coming home after being away for years.
When he came home that evening
he didn’t know where he was.

Every day, he sat in the corner
staring at the wall,
wouldn’t speak, not even to say hello
to his mother as she stood
there in the doorway,
she began to sing him a song,
she’d sing to him at night.

Nothing works and nothing does the trick
like a song that your mother sang in your early years.
When he looked up that moment,
he remembered who she was.

Nothing works and nothing does the trick,
like coming home after being away for years.
When he came home that evening
he remembered who he was.
